The Erta Ale volcano, in the heart of the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia, is one of only five active lava lakes in the world. Located in a very harsh environment, where temperatures frequently reach 45°C / 113°F or more, the landscape is covered by black volcanic rocks for miles around. After a hike to the rim of the crater, it is a short walk inside the crater to the very edge of the lake. A mesmerizing show, better seen throughout the night.
