The diversity of landscapes in NZ is astonishing - from mountains and passes (as here featured the Lord of the Rings) one day to lakes, sea, valleys or glaciers another day. Tongariro was the first National Park established in New Zealand, and is recognised as a World Heritage area for both its cultural and natural values. The Tongariro mountain itself peaks at 1978m and hosts a ski resort.
