This image was taken after a 7 hours' wait at a waterhole in Etosha National Park, Namibia. Hoping to photograph rhinoceros and elephants, I decided to spend an entire afternoon at a waterhole. However, there was very little wildlife activity during the day - only a small herd of impalas came to drink - and, at around 6pm, seeing that the sky was overcast, I almost decided to pack up and go... but eventually decided to stay until the end of daylight. At 7pm, as the sun finally pierced through the clouds to light up the landscape, a black rhinoceros came to drink and bathe. Approaching from the South (to the left of the picture), it came and stood majestically right in the middle of the waterhole for a few minutes. I was lucky to witness this magical moment in Etosha. However, such scenes are getting rarer and rarer as rhinos face extinction. Three rhinos are poached every day, and 20% were poached in the last 5 years. There are only 25,000 left in the world. The threat of extinction they face due to poaching is very real. In an effort to raise money and awareness for this cause, I am donating 50% of print sales of this image to SaveTheRhino.org, but I encoura.ge you to donate to them as well. Buy a print or donate directly to Save The Rhino to help save them before it's too late.
