New Zealand is at the crossing of the Pacific and Indo-Australian plates, and is very much alive with high seismic, volcanic and geothermic activity. The Champagne Pool, so called because of the bubbles released by CO2 at the surface, is a magnificent sight in the Wai-O-Tapu area. Don't even think about swimming here - the water is acidic and boiling.
