In 1991, the eruption of the Pinatubo volcano killed 800 people and released 20 millions tons of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere, resulting in a worlwide decrease of the temperature in the following years. 

The eruption led to the creation of a 2.6 km wide caldera, pictured above. The surrounding landscape was completely knocked over, and the Pinatubo summit lost 260 metres and stands now at 1,485m above see level.
